Amelia Sontori is an accomplished opera soloist and chorus singer. She has been performing as a soloist in Rome for the last two years. Recently However, with the increased alignment of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany’s Racial Laws, she has lost her solo position and been returned to a chorus singer in the opera. This was ordered by the Ministry of Arts & Culture. She performs under the stage name Bella Bassiori.
With no professional recourse and denied official permission to travel from Italy, she has been forced to accept her current situation, although she blames her rival and replacement, Maria Caniglia as the source of her prosecution. Although a British Citizen, her passport and other documents have been seized.
Her body was discovered in early January 1936, three days after her demotion. She had been working on a production of Franco Alfono’s opera, Cyrano de Bergerac. Her primary work was with the Teatro Reale dell’Opera in Rome.
